Philippine Proverbs Book: A Collection of Wise Words for Children

Philippine Proverbs Book: A Collection of Wise Words for Children

Whenever I hear the term “Proverbs” I’d always remember one person. My father. We grew up filled by Papa with these witty sayings to get his point across. How he would say that my siblings and I should always love and respect each other for;

Blood is thicker than water.

How he reminded me to carefully pick my friends.

Tell me who your friends are and I will tell you who you are.

And that;

The empty barrel is the noisiest.

Now that I have a child of my own, Papa constantly ephasize:

What is learned in the cradle becomes a habit forever.

Last 15th of Mach 2016, I considered myself priveleged to be invited for the launch of Philippine Proverbs. I got the chance to meet the people behind this great book up close and personal. Everyone from Tahanan Books were nice and accommodating.

I’m happy that there’s a book like this – a compilation of Proverbs plus nice illustration. A great material for Elijah’s dose of wise words as we start to homeschool him soon.

We flipped through the pages and I love how it has translations to other dialects. It will make children reliaze how rich our Philippine language is. Who knows it might excite them to study and speak these dialects.

The early bird cathches the worm.

Cada pispis ga-dacop sang lago. (Aklanon)

A good name is more valuable than gold.

Nu mapia a ngaran. Am mapipia kan kay nakman. (Ivatan)

Action speaks louder than words.

Ang pagbuhat mas maayo kaysa sa pagsugid. (Kinaray-a)

I enjoyed this delightful bilingual collection of 105 treasured sayings told in over twenty Philippine languages and dialects: Aklanon, Bikol, Boholano, Capiznon, Cebuano, Chavacano, Hiligaynon, Kinaray-a, Ibanag, Igorot, Ilokano, Ivatan, Kapampangan, Maguindanao, Manobo, Masbateño, Palawano, Pangasinense, Surigaonon, Tagalog, Tausug, Waray, and Zambal.

Jeepney and Bike

This is Elijah’s favorite page. He would ask me to read this book which he called Jeepney and Bike.

I’m excited to check out more Tahanan Books for our next bookstore visit!
