Would anyone agree with me that staring at a green patch is somewhat relaxing? Does seeing plants and flowers calm your nerves? That’s their effect on me, those beauties.
In our small family, my husband is a big fan of Urban Gardening. He’s from the countryside and he misses the greeneries that sometimes city life doesn’t have. We have sprouts of gingers, jackfruits, avocado, rambutan, pechay, mango–all those seeds of these fruits we consumed and put in a pot, grown and, hopefully, be transferred to a bigger land.
I envy him as it seems he was born with a green thumb while me, I’ll just share the happiness he has that slowly we are able to build our urban garden.
Did you know that really there’s no such thing as “green thumb”? How about Horticulture, have you heard of it? I did not know these either until weeks ago. I was privileged to be included in the press launch for HortiKultura Filipina 2018. The officers of Philippine Horticultural Society, Inc. confirmed that there’s no such thing as that. It is more of reading and following instructions, the dos and don’ts for your gardening journey to be a successful one. Any plant can thrive for as long as the one who planted and maintains it has the required knowledge. Oh, that gave me hope!
On the other hand, I cannot forget how Mr. Zac Sarian said that Horticulture is an industry. Asking why? Because we can earn from it and turn this into a business. Some plants even value up to millions of pesos! I did not even mention landscaping here.
So what is Horticulture?
Horticulture is the , and any other cultivar. It also includes plant conservation, landscape restoration, soil management, landscape and garden design, construction, and maintenance, and arboriculture. In contrast to agriculture, horticulture does not include large-scale crop production or animal husbandry.

I did not realize that there’s an organization like this. And I am the happiest to know that they hold meetings every month and membership is open for all, a chance to start my gardening journey!
I would love for my kids to have a piece of garden in our soon-to-be new home in the South next year. I like them to have that desire to dirty their hands and grow plants, flowers and what have you. Because for some people it is therapeutic, it might be for them, too. Who knows?

Now, I am all excited about HortiKultura Filipina 2018. This will be on 2-11 February 2018 at the QMC Gardens, Diliman, Quezon City. A festival that will showcase PH’s endemic, indigenous and hybrid plants that aims to promote the Quezon Memorial Circle (QMC) as a showcase place for gardening and horticultural practices in Metro Manila and the entire country. It is celebrated annually, together with its partners, as the largest horticultural event to be held in the Philippines.
We are a homeschooling family, this fair can be a great exposure for our pre-K, I reckon. Definitely something that can pique his interest, one way or another.
